Review: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

As I promised in my last NARS haul blog post (here), and as you can see in the title, I will be reviewing the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never. And yes, it still reminds me of Bieber. I still don’t understand why NARS decided to take inspiration from his songs. Anyhow…

NARS describes the product as following:
“The convenience of a pencil with the application of a lipstick in a jumbo-size crayon design. Instantly coats lips with rich pigment, imparting a velvet matte finish for seamless color. The long lasting yet non-drying formula is enriched with special emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, velvety color for hours.”

I have been loving the lip pencil, and have been wearing it quite a lot. I love the application of the pencil, as it’s quite precise and it’s nice to hold as it’s a quite thick pencil. The product is really pigmented and I feel quite chic, vampy and sophisticated when I wear this lip color – if that makes sense.

Somehow the lighting was really bad so the color looked very strange on camera, so I decided to not include the pictures in natural light. The swatches came out nicely though! Below you’ll find the color with flash, and the swatch of the product.

As you can see, the product is quite pigmented, I only had one layer of this on my lips here. You can see a bit of a dry patch here on my upper lip. I don’t recommend using this when you have very dry and flaky lips, as it just enhances it (as you can see in the picture).

I tried putting on a nice balm (Elizabeth Arden 8H Lip Protectant and my Rosebud Salve) before applying the pencil, but that just didn’t work out. The pencil just doesn’t apply well when there is a lot of moisture on the lips. It is true that the pencil is not drying, as it doesn’t make my lips dry, but also doesn’t really moisture my lips either. If you already have flaky lips, it just won’t be comfortable to wear it. So be sure to scrub your lips with a lip scrub, salt + vaseline or a toothbrush prior applying this product.

The color is gorgeous as you can see above, the thicker line is applied 2/3 times and the thinner line is just applied once. As I mentioned before, it’s quite pigmented. However, the staying power is not that great. I was hoping it to stay very long, but it’s not. It does stay on my lips for 2/3 hours, but certainly not longer than that. And you can’t really eat or drink with it on without re-applying it.

My verdict:

It is a great product, I absolutely adore the color as it is one of its kind (I don’t have any lipstick that is even close to this color) and I just really like wearing it, it just boosts my confidence in a way. I do think the staying power is a bit on disappointing, but I honestly don’t really mind re-applying this from time to time.

So if you’re like me, and you don’t mind re-applying the pencil from time to time, and just love the color, I would definitely recommend getting it. I’m sure you won’t regret it at all! Do remember to scrub your lips (when they are a bit flaky and dry) before applying it, to ensure a flawless finish!

What do you think about the lip pencil, would you consider buying it? And do you like my way of reviewing or do you think it’s too long/detailed? Please let me know!
